What is the difference between a Single Tank Water Softener vs. a Dual Tank Water Softener
A water softener has two jobs: to soften the water and to clean itself during the regeneration cycle. The goal is to find a system that can provide soft water to your home, even during regeneration, without unnecessary waste.

HOW DO WATER SOFTENERS WORK?
Water softeners use the ion exchange process to replace hardness ions in water (calcium and magnesium) with sodium ions to make the water soft. Soft water is better for your skin, hair, and many things around your home like your fixtures, water-using appliances, plumbing, clothing, and tableware. Kinetico’s state-of-the-art, non-electric, multi-tank water softeners provide a continuous supply of soft water that’s better for you and your home.
A single-tank water softener cannot provide soft water when it regenerates, leaving you with an inconsistent supply of soft water in your home. In fact, regeneration downtime with a single-tank softener can last anywhere from one-two hours before soft water is available again.
SINGLE-TANK WATER SOFTENERS
A single-tank water softener system has one resin tank. The resin in the tank has a softening capacity before it must be regenerated (or cleaned). Often, single-tank softeners include a timer to track when the regeneration should occur, based on an estimation of water use and when the resin might be exhausted. At the pre-determined time, the system will regenerate, usually in the middle of the night, whether the system needs to regenerate or not. If the resin is exhausted before the pre-determined regeneration time, the system must wait, and your house will have hard water until a regeneration is initiated and complete. If the resin is not exhausted, the unit will regenerate anyway, wasting salt and water.

DUAL-TANK WATER SOFTENERS
A dual-tank, non-electric water softener consists of two resin tanks.
Instead of the typical timer used with electric softeners, Kinetico systems meter the flow of water through the system. Based on water usage, the system will initiate a regeneration, on demand, once the resin’s softening capacity is depleted, meaning the system will only regenerate when needed.
With two resin tanks, there is no “downtime” when soft water is not available. Kinetico Water Softeners switch service from one tank to the other so when one tank is in service, the other tank is in standby or regenerating. This means a Kinetico softener can regenerate when needed, at any time of day or night, even if water is being used. There is no waiting, hard water breakthrough, estimating or wasted salt and water. Plus, since clean, soft water is always available, the system uses soft water for the regeneration cycle. It simply makes sense to regenerate with clean, soft water rather than hard water like single tank units do.
